McDowell Mtn Park (AZ): Canadian Geoff Kabush continued to win in the Arizona desert last weekend. Jittery Joes has been a Maxxis teammate for a while and the Maxxis rider has been riding his road bike quite a lot lately. In the 8.2 mile first TT, he beat Giants Adam Craig by 30 seconds. The twisty, rocky course made it difficult for the racers to clinch their hardtails again. Kabush claimed that his time advantage was due to being a bit faster through the many corners.

The short track saw punctures continue to strike, with top contenders Adam Craig (Trek–VW) and Jeremiah Bishop(Trek–VW). Early on, Kabush, JHK (Jeremy Horgan-KobelskiSubaru-Gary Fisher), and Liam Killeen (Specialized) opened up some real estate between themselves and the field. They were soon caught by the chase, but just as they were, Kabush launched an aggressive attack. Subaru-Gary Fisher’s Trent Lowe, Todd Wells, JHK, Killeen, and Todd Wells were caught off guard. During the two laps that followed, Kabush was able to hold the lead by as much as 10 seconds. The men at the front of the pack looked at each other as the bell rang for round three. None were willing or able reel in the Canadian flying through the air. They watched as Kabush kept up the pace and won by himself. In the sprint for silver, Hyundai-GTs Todd Wells won. (A two-fer finish for SDG I beam System riders!

Sunday’s 6.2-mile XC course featured a climb that was steep and had many ups and downs. It also featured twisty singletrack and a major climb. The field tried to stop a Kabush sweep but Maxxis’ man surged ahead of the start. Craig, JHK, and Wells stayed at the front for two laps. Killeen (Specialized), was 5 seconds behind. Killeen, Taberlay and Wells made contact on the climb of the third lap, bringing the lead group to six. Chris Sheppard (Haro), also caught on. Kabush made an abrupt acceleration that created a gap of around 20 seconds right before the bell rang. K-Bomb Kabush accelerated on the final lap to open a gap of 45 seconds at the top of the climb. This gave him his third win of the weekend. Killeen took second from the chase group and jumped first, with JHK Craig and Wells taking third, fourth, and fifth.
