Wilderness Closures Threaten Prime California Singletrack

International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), is hosting a series mountain bike rides to show off trails that might be closed for bicycle use due to proposed Wilderness designations. The soon-to-be reintroduced Congressional legislation calls for 2.5 million acres to be reclassified federal Wilderness. Federal Wilderness areas prohibit bicycle use. Many of these proposed areas include popular mountain biking trails that have been used for many years by cyclists.

These events celebrate mountain biking and raise awareness about great trails and lands that are in danger of development. However, they do not include Wilderness land designations that prohibit bicycle use.

Condor Peak Ride June 21

The first IMBA Wild Rider will be June 21 at Condor Peak, east of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Mountains. Condor Peak Trail and the surrounding area offer beautiful singletrack and stunning views within minutes of the city. Condor Peak is home to many mountain bikers who want to protect and preserve the area. These trails have been enjoyed by bicyclists for many years. This is a challenging ride that’s fun and rewarding. Learn how to make this trail safe for cyclists. Visit this page for more information and to register.
Grouse Mountain Ride July 12-13

Chris King and IMBA will host the second Wild Ride at Grouse Hill on July 12-13. The weekend-long event includes two rides on beautiful High Sierra trails, where mountain bikers could also be denied access due to the proposed Wilderness designation. Grouse Ridge can be found west of Donner Summit, near the intersection with Interstate 80 and Highway 20. It boasts some of the most technical riding in the state. The Bicyclists Nevada County has the most recent information on the Grouse Ridge event.
